Dear Colleague:
Writing a book can be one of the most financially
rewarding and emotionally exhilarating events in your life.
Nothing beats writing a book and getting it successfully
published to establish your competence as a coach, consultant, or other
type of service provider. Nothing else you can do can enhance
your career and expand your horizons as much as a book with your name
on the cover.
A published book is a door-opener to
new clients. It proves your competence and sets you apart
from your competition. This paves the way for you to raise your
rates and become more selective in choosing the clients you
want to do business with.
As Harry Beckwith, author of Selling the Invisible,
wrote:
If you are in a service business and want to
change your life, write a book! When I wrote "Selling the Invisible,"
most of my clients were located within view of my office. Now, clients
search me out from around the world!
All that,
while enjoying royalties that can approach five-figures a month!
On the other hand, few endeavors can be more discouraging,
emotionally draining, and poorly reimbursed. After months — perhaps, years — of
work, you can end up with little or nothing to show for your efforts…or—worse—you
can end up with a garage-full of unsold books!
The awful truth about publishing
Although USA Today and other newspapers often
describe six and seven figure advances for first-time authors, these
are rare exceptions. For most first-time authors, the reality is far
different:
Most publishers won’t even glance at a book
proposal from a first-time author unless a recognized literary agent
submits it.
Fewer than one out of twenty book proposals
submitted ever get published.
Advances for non-fiction books have been in a downward
spiral for years—and many books are written without any advance
whatsoever.
Of books that do receive an advance, most fail
to earn additional royalties.
Of the books that do earn royalties, often
authors earn their less than a dollar a copy…paid six months to a
year after the book has been sold in a bookstore!
As a result, the hourly "wage" for many
authors is below the minimum wage for farm workers.
The typical "boilerplate" publishing contract
is a minefield full of innocent-looking provisions designed to trap
the unwary.
Getting published isn’t the only challenge
Writing a book worthy of publication isn’t the only
challenge you face. You have to choose the right publishing alternative
and choose the right publisher. The wrong approach or the
wrong publisher can sabotage your efforts:
Visibility.
Your book will not boost your career if readers can’t easily locate
it because your publisher does not enjoy efficient and widespread distribution.
Image.
Readers judge the value of your words by the cover of your book and
its page layout. A poorly designed cover allows your book to blend in
with the other books on display. A cramped and cluttered page layout
further cheapens your book’s image.
Editing.
Readers will blame you for editing and typographical errors that
you thought the publisher was going to take care of.
Production.
Readers will not respect your words if the cover and inside pages are
printed on cheap paper or the book has a cheap binding.
Lost in
a series. Publishers and devoting more and more attention
to books published as part of a series, i.e. "Chicken Soup,"
"…for Dummies," etc. The "series" formula can easily
smoother your book’s unique message and detract from your identity.
Delays.
It may take up to a year for your book to appear after you turn
in your manuscript.
Quickly
disappear. Today, publishers reduce their exposure by printing
fewer and fewer copies of a book in its first printing. Publishers only
invest in a second printing if the book immediately begins to—and continues
to—sell. Your book may disappear—go out of print—just as it begins
to gain momentum.
After publication
After your book is published, it’s up to you
to promote and squeeze maximum profit out of every word
you’ve written. You have to know how to promote your own
book. Publishers are simply not equipped to aggressively
promote your book for you. It’s up to you to leverage
each word into future income.
I’ve been there!
I know the heartache of unfilled expectations. I’m
the $32,000,000 author.
I’ve written 35 books with a worldwide circulation
exceeding 1.6 million copies. (At $ 20.00 each, well, you do the
math!) My books have been translated into over thirty languages,
including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Icelandic, Hindu, and Russian. And
I’m in close contact with dozens of other authors.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s not so much
the quality of the book that determines
how well you’re rewarded, it’s how you play
the game.
And the playing field has changed.
Traditional book publishing is going through tough times. And, as
is the case in many industries, those who work the hardest—the authors,
in this case—are getting squeezed the most.
This shouldn’t happen to
you! I’m here to show you how to do it right, so you
can write your book with minimum hassle and stress and
harvest the maximum rewards for years to come.
What triggered this book?
Four years ago, I was attending a seminar on web site
usability at a conference in Austin, Texas. The owner of a local firm
specializing in web site usability studies was presenting the seminar.
| During the presentation, one
of the attendees asked: "How much does a web site usability
study cost?"
Without blinking an eye, the presenter responded:
"Between $500.00 and $2,500.00, depending
on whether or not they've written a book on the subject!"
|
That, in a nutshell, is the power of a published book!
Think about it!
What else can you do will
give you the power to raise your rates by a factor of five—and
make you even more desirable because of your higher rates?
You could mortgage your house and run full-page
ads for your service in your local newspapers, and still not enjoy
the benefits that published author enjoy.
But, there's more
The presenter was from Austin and was speaking for
free.
I was also
speaking at the event, but I had been flown
in from New Hampshire and I was being paid several
thousand dollars for — essentially — three
and a-half-hours in front of an audience.
Why?
My recently published Streetwise Guide to Relationship
Marketing on the Internet (which was an Amazon.com best-seller)
had established me as an expert in the field and I had a
strong reputation delivering workshops based on my earlier books.
What a book can do for you?
Books possess "magical" powers.
A book with your name on the cover:
- Positions you as an expert
- Establishes your credibility
- Differentiates you from your competition
- Proves that you are disciplined,
organized, and a hard worker, someone who sticks with
complex projects until they are completed
You instantly become someone in demand, an authority
that people want to listen to, are willing to take advice
from, and want to hire to solve their problems.
But, the going can be tough.
Why I wrote this book
I wrote How to Become both Published and Profitable
so you won’t have to make the mistakes I’ve made (and I’ve made
plenty).
When my writing career took off, I thought I’d get
rich beyond the dreams of avarice. Advances were going up and favorable
reviews kept coming in:
|
The New York Times called my Looking Good in Print:
A Guide to Basic Design for Desktop Publishing, "the
one book to buy when you’re buying only one."
PC Magazine, MacWorld,
PC World, Publish, InfoWorld, and The
Whole Earth Catalog praised my books and called them,
"must reading."
Publisher’s Weekly listed
my Microsoft Office 97 for Windows for Dummies the
Number One best-selling Computer Applications
Book for three years in a row.
Dr. Ralph Wilson had written:
"Roger C. Parker’s Streetwise Guide to Relationship
Marketing on the Internet is significant in that it defines
and illustrates a clear marketing strategy. There's nothing
like it on the shelves. I recommend it to both newbies
and experienced web marketers."
|
I thought I had it made!
But, over time, I began to realize that royalties—no
matter how many books I sold—were never enough. The "real"
money always had to come from other sources: speaking, consulting, writing
for clients both large and small, etc.
No one had ever explained the "publishing
facts of life" to me.
There was no guide to writing from the perspective of future profits—profits
that were often easier to earn than the services I was providing
in my speaking, consulting, and copywriting.
And, certainly, no one told me that there were
alternatives to trade book publishing—i.e. books that publishers
print and distribute through bookstores. (Although it is only recently
have these alternatives become practical for first-time authors.)
There was a need for a practical guide to profitable
publishing, instead of the usual "English Literature" approach
to "developing your personal writing voice."
Reinforcement from a best-selling author
After I got to know Jay Conrad Levinson, who wrote
Guerrilla Marketing, the world’s best-selling marketing book
series, I found I wasn’t the only one who learned—the hard way—that
trade book royalties don’t go very far (or come very often).
As Jay recounted:
Someone once asked me how much I made for my first "Guerilla
Marketing" book. The answer I gave was $10 million…The
book, itself, only paid me about $35,000 in royalties, but
the speaking engagements, spin-off books, newsletters, columns,
bootcamps, consulting, and wide open doors resulted in the
remaining $9,965,000.

Again, I realized just how far off target
most style-oriented writing books were from the actual needs
of first-time authors interested in enhancing their present career
while building additional future profits.
Profit from my experience
I want to share with you the six most
important lessons I’ve learned during the past 15 years:
| Alternatives |
Thanks to recent
changes in technology, there are now alternatives to
the "big publisher" model that lasted for so long.
These alternatives are worth knowing about, even if you ultimately
decide to go with a trade publisher. |
| Terms |
If
you choose the traditional publishing route, I’d like to help
you prepare a compelling proposal, so you can negotiate
the best terms in areas beyond advances and royalty
rates. |
| Efficiency |
Writing a book
does not have to be as time-consuming
and emotionally draining as I, like
most first-time authors, found writing to be. I’ve developed
a step-by-step framework that helps you "harvest
your knowledge" while reducing the time, stress, and
energy involved in writing your book. |
| Promotion |
Regardless
of how your book gets published, you have to assume
the majority of the responsibility for promoting it. I
share ways you can promote your book before, during,
and after you have written it. |
| Ancillary
profits |
Regardless of
how your book is published, I like to show you how
to create fountain of back-end profits from your book.
These can often earn you two…ten…twenty…or—even—one
hundred times the amount of money you receive from
sales of your book! |
| Resources |
There
are wealth of online and written resources that complement
what I have to say. Many are readily available and/or free. |
After
writing over 50 books, I thought I knew it all—but Roger C.
Parker's Profitably Published helped me see new ways of leveraging
off the success of my books by developing additional proprietary
information products.

I've been eager to publish a small
business marketing book for years, but have resisted because
of limited time and I haven't been ready to face the overwhelming
steps of actually getting published. After reading "Profitably
Published," I'm now ready…Roger breaks the publishing
process into a step-by-step action plan. He holds an author's
hand through the process of developing a publisher proposal,
while simultaneously coaching you on preparing each chapter
of your book…More importantly, I now recognize that writing
my first book is just the beginning. It's what I do after
my book gets published that will bring me the credibility
and revenues I crave. The latter is rarely mentioned by publishing
experts…Roger definitely spills his years of publishing
secrets.
